[LYRICS] TOKIO - I believe

From the Tokyo Drive single, released in 2015
Lyrics by Taichi Kokubun
Composed by Taichi Kokubun
Arranged by Tomoya Nagase

KANJI

ENGLISH
Looking back at our day-to-day life
Fills me with a sense of hope
The whole way, we were chasing our dreams

Fighting against our day-to-day life
All our anxiety was squeezed out
And it seemed like it wouldn't stop

The world was distorted
Dazzling in how it glittered
And we turned our eyes the other way

These tiny, everyday things
We didn't notice them, but we
Ah... slowly parted with them, somehow

What is the answer? Who knows, really
We might have lost sight of it along the way
Walking down the path we'd taken
But let's keep going, this time without letting our gazes drift away

If we
Keep walking down this road
With pride and with confidence
And with all our uncertainties, too, then our future could soar
Taking one tiny step could mean the world

The world was creaking
The sound of a bell echoing
And we plugged our ears tight

Where are we headed? Who knows, really
We might have lost sight of it along the way
Walking down the path that we'd taken
But let's keep going, this time without letting our gazes drift away

Tomorrow
We'll find the meaning we've wanted all along
Or at least these're the wishes we'd like to believe in
There's a chance we're suffering from delusions of a sparkling future
But even though nothing changed yesterday, even that could mean the world

Facing things head-on is terrifying
On that day, our feet couldn't move an inch
That's why now we understand more than anything
Even when we stumble, there're always going to be smiles later on

If we
Keep walking down this road
With pride and with confidence
And with all our uncertainties, too, then our future could soar
We'll take that tiny step along the road we've chosen

The first time I tried singing along to this song while reading the lyrics, I almost cried. What the hell.

According to Taichi, he wrote this song taking into account the journey that he and the rest of TOKIO have been taking together over the past twenty-one years... and all the feelings that he had during that time. It's a bit heavy, but then Taichi always has the tendency to think himself not good enough with his perfectionism as far as his work and performance goes. He said not to think too deeply about the meaning of the song, though, which is essentially impossible on account of how much it makes me hurt. orz

It's a very Taichi song as far as composition goes, really. He's just brilliant when it comes to blending instruments--and I find it amazing how he always makes the melody first before the lyrics. I'm so glad that he and Tomo are in the same group; they're both musical geniuses standing at opposite poles (Tomo being more rooted in TOKIO's core sound and Taichi being more experimental), and whenever they work together they always make such beautiful things. It's amazing how Taichi can make such new-sounding things for TOKIO, and how Tomo can mould it so that despite it sounding new, it still sounds so TOKIO. This band really is the best.

Incidentally, this is my favourite song off the single, composition-wise.
